Clergy
From the time of the building of the Hall in 1908 till 7th March 1933 the Congregation was ministered to by the Reverend E.J. Petrie, later Canon Petrie. It is due to his efforts and to the generosity of R.A. Ogg, and their families and friends, that St. Margaret’s became one of the largest, and certainly one of the most dynamic Churches in Scotland.
Canon Petrie was followed by Canon E.H. Brereton, later Dean Brereton, who focused the attention of the Congregation on the Mission of the Church, and as a result of his endeavours St. Margaret’s raised more money for Mission at home and overseas, than all the Episcopal Churches in Scotland put together. The Congregation also fostered a huge number of vocations, supported vast numbers of students for the ministry, and peopled almost every Diocesan and Provincial Board of the Episcopal Church.
To be a member of St. Margaret’s, was to be a member of an active, dynamic, and socially responsible Church.
Canon Brereton was followed by Canon Frederick Goldie, later Dean, then Bishop, who in turn was succeeded by Canon J.H.E.B. Hopkins and then the Rev. N J. Parkes, later Canon Parkes, who served until March 1996. Our last Rector, Canon T. C. O. Montgomery, arrived and was installed, on the day following the Feast of St. Francis, on 5th October 1996. Canon Montgomery moved on to take up post as Rector of St. Ninian’s, Troon, in February 2010.
At present, Reverend Canon Dr. Nicholas Taylor is acting as our Interim Priest until a permanent appointment is made.
